The first listen
I’ve made the mistake a few times of listening to a band’s new record/song one time through and not liking it then listening to it again a few days later and loving it. Our ears expect to hear what a band used to sound like when we should be open minded enjoying something different. Look at the radio. I remember when “Moves Like Jagger” or any other popular music was released and my ears said NO. I don’t like it. Luckily for us, we’re forced to hear that song over and over until our ears are used to it and we like it. Point in case, don’t neglect a band on a the first listen and for God’s sake, listen to it on good speakers or headphones and not your laptop computer speakers. Haha.

The voice
I wanted to blog about what happened to my voice and help clear up any questions some of you may have about why I haven’t been talking for 5 days and why I keep tweeting about not talking. This goes back to the fall tour we did last year. Towards the end of the tour my voice started to go. I did everything I could to gut out those last five shows, but in the end, I ended up only hurting it. Like anything, I figured rest would only help. Lucky for us, we had a two month break so rest was an easy must. I knew something was wrong with my voice because every time I would try and sing high my voice would crack and break. When I sang falsetto my voice sounded like 3 or 4 horrible tones were blending together. Imagine hitting any high four notes together on a piano at the same time. That’s what my voice sounded like. It was completely uncontrollable. After the month of December went by, nothing got better. All the same things continued to happen. This is when I began to think I needed surgery, but before jumping to any conclusions, I decided to see a throat Dr. about it. I met with the Dr. and she stuck this huge 3 foot long scope down my right nostril and made her analyses. (Ouch) I have a blood blister on my right vocal cord and the outer lining of the right side of my vocal cord is inflamed. She then told me if I wanted this to get any better I would have to stop talking for 2 weeks. That means not a word, nothing, zip…..nada. So here I am. Day 5 is ending and I’m moving on to day 6. This is harder than you’d ever expect. I can’t talk on the phone. I can’t even hang out with friends because it’s too awkward to just sit there and write down everything on a note pad. You view things differently when you can’t speak. For instance, I listen more. I’m not quick to speak on something I don’t agree with or hurts my feelings. I have to listen because I can’t really say anything and making faces just makes me look stupid. Stupid isn’t cute. My next appointment is on Monday of next week. We’re taking photos so maybe I’ll post them if you’d like. I fly to Columbus, Ohio on Thursday because we’re shooting a video for our song Stay. I’m excited about it. We haven’t done a live performance shot video since The Silence. That was like 2 years ago. Anyways, I’ll be tweeting about it as much as I can. Thanks for reading. You guys are kind of the shit! ;)
